Warm weather and wet dogs!

Its that glorious time of the year again!!
We can begin swimming in the large outdoor pool (Yay!!)

It hasn't been an easy winter though, the big outdoor pool stayed colder than it has been in years, despite our best efforts. but now the temperature is picking up daily!

The small indoor pool was hit by the storm last week and it blew the solar panels out of the wall, and tripping the power, making that pool drop to 20 degrees (not ideal for rehab patients) once we got that sorted, the rats (or darling rabbits we seemed to have inherited) chewed the wiring to the element, making the small pool cold yet again!

All of this is now under control and we can resume as normal!
Hold thumbs for beautiful weather the rest of the year and more!

Remember sunscreen (I have nice red shoulders screaming at me for forgetting that :) )

It has been cold these last few days, and it looks like our winter has come early, not ready to give up swimming time a client came up with an idea - after swim jackets - and they work like a charm! keeping the dogs toasy warm so they dont get sick or shiver.

Ike here is showing off his Jersey and is not cold or uncomfortable in the least.
It works if there is a nip in the air or the wind turns icy, as long as the pool temp stays up we should be able to swim for a while hopefully.

This very special boy left a void in the hearts of many when he passed away on friday.
He will be dearly missed.
Gorbi was a brave, enegetic and happy dog for his entire life, never seen without a toy by his side.
He left this world at a ripe old age!

The Rainy weather looks set to stay

The heavy rains have played havoc with our normally sparkling pool, turning it pea green overnight. Thank goodness it is once again crystal clear.
Hope the storms are over for a while.

Blue is now joining sister Deedee for weekly swimming sessions.

Honey is now swimming laps, in order to build up the muscle in her hind legs without putting pressure on her already fragile knees. She is a natural.

Coco, a 3 year old spaniel, has a narrowing in the spine, which is putting pressure on the Sciatic nerve.

A new year, a new begining

Seasons Greetings to Everyone.
May the new year bring all you wish for yourselves.
We have been off line for quite a while as Christine was indisposed for just over 2 months.

We have had a number of new patients:

These two beauties are Diesel (on the left) and Roxy. Roxy came to us to help regain the use of her leg after she tore the cruciate ligament. Brother Diesel just came for moral support.

Josy, had a femur head amputation, a few weeks ago and is coming to us to gain muscle on her hind leg and regain use of it. She is a lovely dog with a great personality!

Here Josy is with Lucy, her sister. Lucy just comes along for the ride and on her visits she climbs in the pool on her own to paddle.

Bella, a Staffie Cross, comes purely for fitness, she is a sweet, yet stubborn, girl but enjoys swimming.

Jupiter, Bella's older brother comes for swimming to help him with his hips, this old boy has a heart of gold, and a stubborn streak to match his sister.

Angus (on the left) and Cinnamon are Jupiter and Bella's cousins. They come for swimming too, Angus has a chronic Eye problem that requires Cortisone, making him pick up weight, so he is here for weight loss. His sister cinnamon is here just for the swim - she loves to swim!

Cinnamon is not shy of photos and loves to pose - she is beautiful!

This is Dee-Dee, she is an adorable girl and although it takes her time to trust people she is affectionate when she lets you in. The reason for her referral is also a torn cruciate.

We are thrilled to report on two real success stories:

Astro was paralysed in her hind legs and was unable to walk, she is now running around with the other dogs, she is still a little unbalanced but is doing incredibly well.
Running like a champ!

Magoo came to us after all four limbs were left paralysed after a stroke, he is now up and about, it took only one session to see an improvement in this remarkable man.
He just gets up and goes - there is no stopping this boy!

We Gained a new member of the extended family, Cybill, she has captured every one's hearts!
This face says it all - she has everyone wrapped around her finger!

The weather was ruthless and the hydro took a beating - it is all fixed now.
The carport fell over and needed to be replaced.

The thatching needed to be re-done after being hit by debris.

The stable roof flew off during the storm leaving the horses frightened and exposed.

Christmas with the family is always fun - here all the "grand kids" are relaxing before lunch!

It has been a rather sad couple of weeks. We have lost two grand old ladies.

R.I.P Storm and Shadow

Storm, a member of our extended family, ruled the roost for all of her 14 years. She had such a feisty spirit right up to the end. Her bark was worse then her bite.
Miss you Babe!!!

After surgery to correct a hip problem Shadow's organs started to shut down and her family had to make the decision to let her go.

Not all news was bad, we had some new beginnings too

When we first saw Zorro his back legs were so weak he could barely stand. Look how strong he is now!

More and more we are seeing puppies with congenital joint problems. Sadly some of these have come from breeders who claim to be registered. The good news is, if the condition is diagnosed early and therapy is started the prognosis is encouraging.

R.I.P Ronin
Ronin, one of Angela's family of Shepard's, passed away last week very suddenly, shortly after being diagnosed with Biliary. His whole family miss him sorely.

R.I.P Ceasar.
This wonderful teddy Bear's weak joints just could no longer support his weight and his family had to make the very difficult decision to release him from his pain. Although he was still a "baby" he made a huge impact on all who came into contact with him.

Spring has well and truly sprung. The weather is balmy and the plant life is once again waking up, it is so exciting to see the fresh green shoots!
The animals are also enjoying the opportunity to start swimming.

Cindy's dogs all came for a visit - little did they know they were going to be taught to swim!

Tarzan, the 3 year old BoerBoel had surgery for a cruciate ligament. He looks so forlorn with his Elizabethan collar.

Another Puppy came to us with a joint problem.

Bingo, a 5 month old ridgeback, exercising on the peanut, the tendons in his front right leg have contracted. He has been fitted for an orthopedic brace, which will form a large part of his rehab.

While their dog, Bingo, was having his therapy, Mia and her little brother had fun at the jungle gym.

Angela was one of the first to bring her dogs back for a swim, and of course Troy came along.
Troy - a long haired Shepard - after a hair cut. The new "do" seemed to give him a new lease on life. He was behaving like a spring chicken!

Sorry for the delay in updating the blog - we have had quite a lot happening on this side of the page, but lets jump straight into it -

Seeing as Hera and Stitch both need to swim we have decided to swim them together - it works well as they need to push past each others currents and the jets in the water in order to keep going - giving them each a great work out!

They seem to enjoy racing each other to the end.

After his swim Stitch, who is improving nicely plays with his beloved ball.

Hera, meanwhile, has a great sleep!

We have had quite an influx of hip dsyplasia patients recently.

There is Zorro, a 9 month old cross lab who has HD or a dislocated hip, none can be confirmed as he also has a heart condition which prohibits any x-rays or operations or exercise. This spoiled boy just gets a weekly Photizo and massage session.

Then there is Tempo, this 4 year old Lab, he just comes to keep his muscles from atrophying after a double femur head removal operation. He suffers from seizures if he is over excited so we take it slow with him.

And then Ceaser, a 9 month old cross Boerboel, has knee and hip dysplasia.

On his first visit he was not to keen on making friends and stuck close to his Dad's side.

During the Photizo session He kept looking back to see what was happening.

His first swim and he made everyone proud! He swam well with no splashing or panicking.

At last our indoor pool heater has been repaired and we can get back to swimming.
This week we spent some time with our extended family.

Jason brought Jazz to the Hydro for a visit and to try burn off some of her excess energy.

When it was time to go home - she just jumped in the car and waited for us to join her.

Clearly upset about his swim- "When you said we were going to visit Granny you never mentioned the swimming part!"

Hera and Stitch are slowly beginning to make friends.

Hera took a shine to Wendy almost immediately. Hera is normally quite reserved and stays with the immediate family.

We have had the most frustrating couple of weeks - The heating in the indoor pool is on the blink, and to date we have not been able to find the problem.
I am really getting desperate!!!
The Ice cold weather is not helping.

On a lighter note -

The Drumblade community got together for an afternoon of cricket.

Stitch had a dislocated hip - resulting in him having to have a femur head removed.

The weather has been so cold and miserable lately causing the treatment room to be cold.

While we were trying to get the pool fixed we enjoyed the company of a beautiful Bull Terrier.

Brenda, her family and helpers run a NPO offering Equitherapy to children with special needs. We went along to treat three of their horses.

There was Jock - a sweet man with a broken elbow - He sat so well with the Bemer Blanket on. All treatments done were watched by their dog, Bobbie.

Then there was beautiful Red - He has a sprained suspension ligament. He was very interested to see what the Photizo did.

And of course Harley, She has a sore neck and as a result her whithers have been giving her problems. We could not put the Bemer blanket all the way up her back as she just pushed it off. It was so rewarding to see the almost immediate relief she got from the Photizo treatment. She was able to extend her neck to a range she was unable to reach before.

The weather has been kind to us so far. The days have been balmy and we have been able to continue fitness training in the big pool.

The onset of Winter

This beautiful boy tried so hard but in the end it was all too much for him, his owners Andrew and Surette had to make the difficult decision to let him go.

This week has been full of new experiences for everyone from puppies learning to swim and new companions for others we have a lot to report on.

On our way home from the Hydro Michelle and I found this gentle boy who judging by the frayed collar had escaped from somewhere. We asked around the neighbourhood, nobody knew who he belonged to. We took him to the SPCA and hope he will be reunited with his owners or find a new home.

After Harley Passed away Willow was very lonely and after Ockert lost his female Simoon, we decided to play matchmaker and introduce Tempest and Willow. They get on like a house on fire.

Mayor's visit

On Saturday 17 April the Drumblade community held a meet and greet braai at the Hydro for the mayor of Midvaal, Timothy Nast and his wife Kim. Four other Midvaal councillors joined us as well.

The men all gathered around the braais solving the problems of the world.

Mayor Nast presenting Elaine Potgieter, chairman of the Drumblade Conservancy, with a Boabab sculpture, because of all the areas in Midvaal, Drumblade ordered and planted the most trees from the municipality.

Duncan wanted to know if the mayor beat his own personal lap time of 35 seconds in the pool. He was not impressed when we told him the mayor did not swim.
Perhaps next time!

Not too much has been happening over the past two weeks. We have, however, had quite a few new clients.

And some good news about Hera:

Hera had her cast removed from her front leg. She is coming to terms with the slight deformity of her foot. On Friday the pin in her femur will be removed. It has been a long 8 weeks, but she is really worth it. Her personality has started to emerge and she is delightful.

And of course,

Basil, a 7 month old Basset cross Beagle has become the latest member of our extended family.

Magnificent Uri had intestinal surgery and hasn't been able to swim for quite a while. We missed him and it was great to have him back.

He had a lot of catching up to do!

Diesel a 17 month Staffie X is having therapy to help him recover from a hip surgery, He is a curious dog with heaps of personality and a huge heart.

Bear is a gentle affectionate boy, this Ridgeback Lab X is being treated for stiff and sore muscles. He is sweet boy that just melts hearts.

Summer rains

Back again after a long weekend. The weather is not being kind to us - wet and rather chilly - hope it will improve soon.

R.I.P Shumba

This little man went to puppy heaven on Saturday. Even though his life was short he lived it to the full and made everyone who met him smile at his antics. His mom Bev, gran Dawn and sisters Skye and Holly will always have him close to their hearts.

Jess and Cami are coming along so well - they have really come out of their shells and are real social butterflies now.

Here they are showing everyone just how beautiful they are.

Cleo is such an affectionate girl, she really loves all the attention she gets when being treated.

Subsequently Cleo became very ill. She had internal bleeding, the cause of which was not known. She is much better now but still not out of the woods and remains on intense treatment.

Roller-coaster ride of life

This week we have had quite a few ups and downs, we got good news one day and bad the next, luckily everything worked out in the end - lets just hope it all keeps going up from here.

Our first bit of bad news was Hera had a few set backs with her recovery, but it seems as though we are now on track.

Here we are trying to introduce Stitch to Hera in the hope that they will be friends and keep each other busy, but the Hera's cast seems to frighten poor Stitch.

Some good news - Impi came for her first swim, and did beautifully.

Riff Raff's curiosity got the better of him when he decided to take a look at the indoor pool and fell in (well tried to jump across but never made it to the other side) Apart from his dignity being slightly bruised he bounced back quickly and was fine.

The end of summer is near

It looks as if summer is getting ready to leave us, a sad thought for all those sun lovers, but not everyone is feeling it - swimming is still a lot of fun for these water loving dogs.

We had a puppy come for a lesson - it was a beautiful day for swimming!

Max, a 3 month old Rottie, is about to have his first swim.

Hera is doing well, the typical terrier behaviour is coming out and it is getting tough to keep her in the prescribed cage rest.

Troy and Kallie brought two friends from P.E for a visit.

They thought it would be fun to join Troy in the pool. Michelle had her work cut out keeping them at bay.

We had a new client this week, Impi has sore elbows and stiff muscles (who wouldn't if you have Ridgebacks as your siblings)

She loved every minute of her treatment and afterwards she was completely relaxed.

This is proof that winter is making a comeback - Swallows have been gathering for the past few weeks.

A rainy end to February

Over time you have seen pictures of some horses we have treated at the Highveld Horse Care Unit.

This organisation rescues abused and neglected horses and do a sterling job rehabilitating and where possible re homing these animals. For more information their website is http://www.horsecare.org/

Although we help where we can, it is not always possible to give as much time as required. The answer would be for them to have their own Photizo.
The Photizo people have offered me a unit at an excellent price and we are trying to raise the necessary funds.

Sandy and RJ came for their first visit - Sandy the LabX has hip problems at the tender age of 18 months.

RJ, the big man has shortened tendons in his right hind leg due to an old injury as a small puppy.

On Monday afternoon Diane and Mike picked up a little Fox Terrier on the side of the road, she had been hit by a car.

She has had surgery to repair a broken femur and her front leg is in a cast to stabilize an injured wrist.

This gentle two year old fillie was confiscated by the Highveld Horse Care Unit. When she was found she was harnessed to a cart and was still expected to work in this condition.

We saw her twice for Photizo therapy. The vet who works with the Horse Care Unit has now taken her to his farm so that he can attend to her daily.

Skye, Holly and Shumba are on holiday at Doggon Kennels. We went to visit them and to give Skye her weekly treatment.

The trio was happy to see us.

The beautiful Shar Pei, who adopted the staff at one of the racing stables at Turffontein Race Course late last year, passed away last night of suspected poisoning.

These last two weeks have been a bit quiet because of all the rain we've been having. Now that the sun is shining here is hoping that it is here to stay for a while. Although rain may dampen some people's spirits it did not upset the animals too much - they were as full of energy - if not more - then ever.

Rain, rain go away. There was so much rain this month we could practically watch the grass grow.

The ridgebacks made it for their bi-weekly swim just before the rain hit.

Here we have Magic. She came for her first visit to the hydro, She tagged along with Mr Brown and the other girls.

Mr Brown hurt his leg, we gave him a treatment to relieve the pain. What a brave man he is!

The Dobermans also made their swim - they had their measurements taken so we can track their progress. Both Hansie and Troy have gone from lopsided measurements to perfectly balanced statures.

Piper came along and boy was she surprised - she got to take a free swim in the big pool - and she loved it. Piper did fantastically well.

Sally, the 5 year old Daschund, we started treating this delightful lady she has huge spirit!

She had an operation for a spinal lesion and needs treatment to get her back into the habit of using her legs again.

This handsome man is Tyson - He is getting old and his legs are a bit painful. He is such a gentle old man and loved his massage.

Apart from the rain we had to be vigilant when we swam - A pair of Plovers have a nest with babies on the property. These brave souls guard it relentlessly - sending every one ducking and diving as we are trying to swim.

We are back in full swing after the holidays. There have been a few days of bad weather which has hampered some swimming, but we managed to do a few house calls and we enjoyed the antics of the animals we manged to treat when weather was good.

Duncan, on his first visit for the year, found a stuffed husky and tried to sneak out the door with it.

Cami was intrigued by the geese, but her sister, Jess, found something more interesting.

We went to do Skye's treatment at home as her Gran, Dawn, was not feeling to well. We also met the rest of the family.

Charmer and Intuition were busy helping Odile, the gardener, cut the grass when we arrived.

They greeted us then went back to work - trimming down where they thought Odile had missed a spot.

With a new addition to the family everyone is kept on their toes. 8 week old ridgeback Shumba is a curious little handful.

He was constantly trying to see what Michelle was doing to Skye - making sure he was not left out of anything - not even his rope toy could distract him.

Shumba eventully got the hint and settled down to play by himself.

Recharging his batteries during his nap - so he will be ready for action after Skyes treatment.

Holly who spent the whole time behind the couch finally came out for a bit of attention.

We went to do another house call this week - this time we set off to see Benfica and Lira, two Rottie puppies with HD, for the second time and what a delight they are.

Lira loved the treatment and soon settled nicely on Michelles lap, someone should tell her she's not as small as she used to be.

Benfica was next and he enjoyed himself as much as his sister did.

Asta, a 4 year old Weimaraner, had a growth removed from her neck. Unfortunately it had grown into her spinal cord and as a result she only has limited movement on her right side. The doctor believes that rehabilitation may take awhile, prognosis is good.

She wears a special harness to give her support and help her to walk.
